Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola provides an extraordinary journey to Apharwat station. The cable line, spanning 2,688 meters with an altitude difference of 881 meters, begins its horizontal traverse on the Kungdoor plateau for the initial stretch. As the gondola ascends Mount Apharwat, the incline significantly increases, passing compression pylons 5 and 8.

This leg of the journey, more breathtaking than the first section, gradually reveals an exceptional panorama, offering passengers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of Gulmarg. A second panoramic view unfolds, showcasing the majestic Himalayan peaks before reaching the upper station. The entire ascent takes approximately 9 minutes, maintaining a speed of 5 m/s.

Due to the avalanche-prone terrain, the gondola route follows a ridge line extending to the summit. All 18 pylons are elevated on sturdy concrete bases for solidity and stability. The manual assembly of these structures presented challenges, resulting in unique configurations like the linked passage 12C and 4S of pylons 8 and 9, or the series 8S, 6S, 6S, 6S of peak pylons 15-16-17-18. Notably, the safety line is fixed halfway up the pylons, deviating from the typical placement on the heads to prevent cable overlap during stormy winds.

The mountain station at Apharwat, situated at an altitude of 3980 meters, exhibits a rustic appearance due to extreme weather conditions. The building, featuring a metal frame and sheet metal cladding, is designed for durability and easy assembly. Intricately crafted balusters adorn the staircase railings, providing an unexpected aesthetic contrast amid the rugged surroundings.

In the challenging high mountain environment, aesthetics take a backseat for the Kashmiri operator, evident in the presence of abandoned cranes, cables, and concrete mixers around the station. However, these elements indirectly contribute to the adventurous atmosphere that characterizes the place, offering a unique blend of rugged charm and natural beauty.
